Remove a signature from a PDF: what you can and cannot undo

Whether a signature can be removed depends on where you are in the process. Before you finish, removing a mark is easy. After a document is completed and shared, the right fix is a new version, not an edited copy of the signed one.

DocAISign paid checkout is not currently enabled. Self-signing is free; check your available sends and the Pricing page before planning a request.

Before you save or send

In the browser-only signer, select the signature and use Remove selected signature, or drag it to the right place, before preparing the PDF. In the standard editor, delete a box with its remove button while the document is still a draft.

Neither tool changes the original file on your device, so you can also start again from the unsigned original.

After you downloaded your own signed copy

A signature placed on your own copy becomes part of that page. Instead of trying to erase it, go back to the unsigned original and sign it again. Delete or clearly rename the wrong copy so it is not sent by mistake.

After a request was sent but not signed

Revoke the link so it stops working, then fix the document and send a new request. In DocAISign a revoked send is not returned, and the new request uses a new send.

After someone else has signed

Do not edit or remove another person’s signature from a completed PDF. Changing the file makes it differ from the fingerprint in the audit record, and a certificate-based signature reports the change. Ask the other party to agree a corrected version and sign that one.

PDFs with existing signature fields

DocAISign’s browser-only tools refuse PDFs that already contain signature fields, so an existing digital signature is not overwritten by accident. If you need to sign such a file, ask the sender how they want the next signature added.

Keep a record of the correction

Keep the mistaken copy separately with a note of what was wrong, and store the corrected signed PDF with its audit record. A clear trail of versions is easier to explain later than a quietly edited file.
